The SRI LANKA MEDICAL COUNCIL is a statutory body established for the purpose of protecting health care seekers by ensuring the maintenance of academic and professional standards, discipline and ethical practice by health professionals who are registered with it.
As presently constituted the Council has representation from medical faculties of the state universities as well as from professionals in the state and private sector.
It is a body corporate having perpetual succession and a common seal.

The Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna has informed the SLMC that the ERPM Part B due to be held from the 21 June 2012 onwards has to be postponed due to the on-going strike of non-academic staff. Candidates will be informed of the new time table in due course. Please note that there has been no change in the time tables of the other two centres

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has informed the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) that the next ERPM Part B (Clinicals and Viva Voce examination) will be held in June 2012. The UGC has informed the Council that this exam will be coordinated by three medical faculties - Colombo, Ruhuna and Jaffna. The dates on which the examination is to be held will be notified later after consultation with the UGC and the selected medical faculties. Applications of candidates should be handed over by the applicants at the Council Office between 9.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. from Tuesday, 8 May 2012 to Friday, 18 May 2012 (except on Saturday and Sunday). Eligibility - 'New Format' candidates who have completed Part A of the ERPM and 'Old Format' candidates who have passed the theory paper in the respective subject are eligible to apply. Medical graduates from Sri Lankan Universiities and medical graduates from recognised foreign medical schools, who have completed Part A and B of the ERPM, who are eligible to apply for internship are advised to apply for Provisional Registration as early as possible. The relevant forms can be collected at the Reception Desk. However, the Provisional Registration Certificate will be issued to them only when the Ministry of Health calls for applications for appointmment as intern medical officers.

The SLMC reviewed the existing list of recognised medical schools/universities and after contacting all the medical schools on its list decided to exclude those medical schools which failed to respond to its communication from the list of recognised medical schools/universities w.e.f. 29 August 2011 . These schools will be included in a suspended list which will be available for reference at the SLMC Office.

In compliance with a court order the INDEX NUMBERS of all candidates had to be changed. This has caused a delay in posting the Admission Cards to candidates. Please refer the 'ERPM' link regarding action to be taken by the candidates who do not receive their Admission Cards in time.

In accordance with the Order of the Supreme Court in the SC/FR Application No.124/2009, the letter of the Chairman, UGC dated 2 July 2009 regarding its implementation and the order on the motion filed on the case SC/FR 83/2011 on 31 March 2011, the Sri Lanka Medical Council will receive applications for the above examination from Monday 13 June 2011 during office hours. Medical practitioners registered under Section 29, persons entitled to practise medicine and surgery under Section 41 and dentists registered under Section 43 of the Medical Ordinance are due to renew their registration on the 1 January 2010. Registration should be renewed not later than the 30 June 2010. The application form appearing under "Useful Information" may be used for this purpose.

The Sri Lanka Medical Council has until now recognised internship done outside Sri Lanka for the purpose of registration as medical practitioners. The Council has decided to discontinue this practice with effect from 01 May 2010. Thereafter, internship done only in approved hospitals in Sri Lanka will be recognised for registration. Thus internship done in institutions outside Sri Lanka from 1 May 2009 will not be considered for registration when the decision becomes effective on 1 May 2010.
